Short Answer

BY ADAM SPARKS

I taught English and Social Studies for 7 years.

As a teacher, I found myself in this frustrating cycle: spending nights and weekends writing detailed comments on student essays, only for those same papers to end up in backpacks or trash cans, my feedback completely ignored.

That’s how Short Answer was born.

I started creating it when I was still in the classroom with a simple goal: get kids to actually think about the feedback provided on their writing. What started as a classroom solution evolved into my master’s capstone project at Stanford’s Learning Design and Technology program, where I spent a year refining the concept in 2022.

Short Answer is a web app in which teachers create short writing prompts for students. Students respond, then provide feedback to one another in a variety of gamified writing activities. It’s all based around short form, social, gamified writing experiences that make writing practice fun for students and easy for teachers.

We launched in 2023 – arguably the most disruptive time to enter K12 writing instruction. AI has completely upended how writing is taught and produced in schools. How do we know students are doing their own writing? How do we make writing meaningful in an AI world?

Short Answer helps teachers address some of these questions. We’re helping teachers bring more authentic writing into their classrooms, creating environments where they can better control and understand the influence AI has on the student writing process. Our peer-to-peer platform allows students to provide and receive feedback from classmates, creating a social environment where students can share their writing with their classmates.

We're still early in this journey, working out of a farmhouse outside Louisville, Nebraska, but the impact we're seeing keeps us going. We support 70,000+ monthly active teacher and student users across all 50 states and 10 countries.

With AI now embedded in virtually every platform students use, kids are getting fewer opportunities to practice their writing skills; practice “reps” are disappearing. That’s why we believe writing instruction can’t fall solely on English teachers anymore – it needs to be embedded across the entire curriculum, from science to history to math.

We support 70,000+ monthly active teacher and student users across all 50 states and 10 countries. With support from grants like LaunchLNK and the growing Lincoln startup community, we’re excited to continue building a solution that makes writing meaningful for students while helping teachers navigate this new AI landscape.
